How It Works

2ND WIND‘s unique combination of ingredients helps to clear lactate from the bloodstream faster and circulate it to the rest of the body so that it can be used as an additional fuel source for exercise and other energy demands, improving your performance and reducing muscle recovery time. The old school of thought was that when lactate accumulated in your muscles, it hindered performance and directly led to muscle fatigue and soreness, slowing muscle recovery. Now we know that’s not the whole story. New scientific evidence adds depth to this theory by showing that lactate is one of the body’s preferred fuels. 2ND WIND makes easier for your body to redirect this premier fuel back into your cells so you can work harder with easier muscle recovery.

Up close and personal with lactic acid

Lactic acid is naturally produced in the body, but especially during exercise when the muscles are working hard under low oxygen conditions. Lactate enters the bloodstream and travels to the liver where it is used to create fuel. Through a process known as gluconeogenesis, the liver converts lactate into pyruvate, which is then used to create glucose, which is used by all the cells in the body and burned in the mitochondria to create ATP.

During exercise, the body preferentially uses glucose for its energy demands; however when glucose stores are depleted, the body taps into glycogen, its energy reserves stored in the muscles. When glycogen is gone, it next uses lactate as a fuel. Only when all of these are gone, does the body begin to break down muscle tissue (to release amino acids) for its energy demands. Because 2ND WIND helps the body better use lactate, it refuels your body and keeps you working out longer, performing better and increases your stamina and endurance.

In a nutshell, the 2ND WIND endurance supplement combination does two things to increase performance and stamina:

First, 2ND WIND increases microcirculation in the muscles, improving the distribution of oxygen to the body (to keep the energy processes in the body going) while also removing waste products, such as lactate, and redistributing it so it can be utilized for fuel. This is where the triple mushroom blend comes into the formula – cordyceps*, reishi, and enoki. It’s important to understand that you can’t simply add the mushrooms to your diet and expect results. You need the precise balance of the specific mushroom preparations found only in 2ND WIND.

Second, 2ND WIND enhances the immune system, which is key to having good energy. This is where the eleuthero and tangerine come into play. Eleuthero is an adaptogen that helps your body overcome the effects of stress. Ripe tangerine peel is one of the key supportive ingredients in the formula. It removes stagnation in the digestive system, which often happens when people exercise. This explains the stomach cramping that can happen when we exercise vigorously.

So we put 2ND WIND to the test in human research studies, and in real life, with real athletes.

2ND WIND is rooted in the belief that increasing performance is best achieved by unblocking the bottlenecks that impede energy, rather than simply trying to boost energy. The key to 2ND WIND’s effectiveness is its ability to increase microcirculation to the muscles, specifically blood and lymph circulation, which helps redistribute the waste products of metabolism, like lactic acid, and allows the body to tap into this premier fuel source. This has been tested and substantiated in several clinical trials. Clinical Trials 2ND WIND has been the subject of two human clinical studies showing its effectiveness in improving lactate clearance and muscle recovery:

Human Clinical – Running 1 In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers compared the effects of either 500 mg or 1 gram (1000 mg) of 2ND WIND versus placebo on the clearance of lactate. After 2 weeks, test subjects exercised on a treadmill until exhausted. Lactate levels were measured immediately after exercise and 15 minutes later to calculate the rate of lactate clearance. The high dose group continued taking 2ND WIND for another two weeks, and the treadmill test was repeated. After 2 weeks, those taking 1 gram of 2ND WIND showed significant improvements in lactate clearance compared to both the 500 mg group (50% higher clearance) and the placebo group (157% higher). Subjects taking 2ND WIND experienced an 80% increase in lactate clearance after 2 weeks, and a 110% increase after 4 weeks. They also showed improved heart rate recovery after 4 weeks.

Human Clinical – Cycling 2 In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, subjects were given 1,350 mg of 2ND WIND (or placebo) and performed an exercise test, followed by the measuring of lactate levels at 3 minute intervals post-exercise for a total of 12 minutes. Compared to placebo, those taking 2ND WIND accumulated significantly lower levels of lactate over the recovery period. At the end of 12 minutes, the 2ND WIND group’s lactate levels were 7% less than baseline values while the placebo group’s levels increased by 23% over baseline.

Product Development

How this product was developed Development of 2ND WIND began while I was treating professional athletes in Seattle with herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy and nutrition in the 1980’s and 90’s. Athletes, like everyone else, wanted “more energy.”

While trying and assessing the effects of many known energy-boosting ingredients it became clear that, rather than just increasing energy, the body needed more help moving and transporting the fluids that supply energy-giving oxygen and nutrients – as well as moving and transporting the fluids away from muscles that contain the waste products of energy metabolism. Increasing energy turned out to be more about releasing “stuck” energy rather than just increasing the amount of energy.

2ND WIND‘s Power Mushroom Complex, which includes our patented Enoki preparation, combined with energy tonic (ginseng and eleuthero) and energy moving herbs (tangerine peel) turned out to be the answer. We made some discoveries about the benefits of combining the Enoki and Ganoderma mushrooms for relaxing microcirculation, which made it possible to deliver the energy tonic benefits from Ginseng and Eleuthero to muscle tissue more efficiently.

The “open and relax” microcirculation approach that helps deliver essential components of energy to the muscles turns out to also improve the body’s efficiency in clearing away the waste products of energy metabolism (lactic acid) for re-use in providing energy to less fatigued and congested muscles elsewhere in the body. Usage

Take 2 capsules daily on before breakfast or lunch. While it is not necessary to load, many athletes report faster results when starting with a loading dose of 3 capsules per day for a period of two weeks.

We have not done clinical studies on loading after strenuous exercise, but many reports and our own experience strongly suggests that when recovering from an intensive bout of exercise, like the first day on skis, first day back on the soccer field, or when recovering from a marathon or triathlon, loading post exercise can help.
